Default Tyria Solo Challenge

Some years ago I soloed most missions being inspired by Witte Was's thread. Now I started Guild Wars again and was shocked at how dumbed down it is. So for another challenge I started an attempt to solo as much of Tyria's missions as possible.

Rules:
- no interaction with other players besides chatting and buying/selling from the NPCs
- no item transfer through the Xunlai chest
- no consumables
- no traveling outside the Prophecies camapign (I actually broke this rule, but only got less than 100 exp out of it)
- no hard mode (that implies no farming elite tomes)

I thought the perfect choice for a solo character is the warrior and to fit the cliché a wammo.

I spent some time in pre-searing leveling up and eventually became a true sword-wielding wammo. On level 5 I left that nice place and immediately disconnected and after the reconnect flagged the henchmen away and killed the ranger charr boss myself.
Not wasting any time my level 6 warrior ran straight to the Great Northern Wall and started beating monsters up. Due to a lack of speed buffs the charr group near the cinematic surprisingly almost killed me, but I returned safely. My experience with the charr showed me I have to do some leveling so I did some skill quests and went up to level 8 before going after Fort Ranik and its bonus. The rush to Ruins of Surmia was simple but I was unsure if I could already keep Rurik alive so I instead went to good old running and did some quests along the way. Nolani Academy was easy but I decided to save the bonus for later.
Then because I didn't feel like soloing Borlis Pass and Frost Gate a long running sequence followed of which I took surprisingly few screenshots. However at Sanctum Cay it was time to trade my 25 armor in for a more fitting 71 armor from the crafter directly outside the outpost for which some farming had to happen. Then just for fun I killed that bastard Galrath who tormented me so much as a noob. After some more questing and farming I was level 17 and ready to go full wammo style for Sanctum Cay. This was actually mildly frustrating because the mesmer boss kept spawning at the end again and again and I had no answer to his Shatter Enchantment (maybe I just suck) but eventually I was lucky.
In the Crystal Desert I spent my time farming scarabs and wurms for collector items and farming griffons (yeah...) for exp. I also finished Elona Reach by simply running through but saw no light in Dunes of Despair and Thirsty River, but wasn't trying too hard either because my equipment wasn't that great yet.
On level 20 it was time for the Droknar run. I used to do that for money back then, but seeing that it took me 24 attempts and a donation to Grenth I may would have annoyed some customers. However once I passed Lornar's Pass the rest was a walk in the park. I also ran to Ice Caves of Sorrow and Deldrimor Warcamp, but am unsure on how to continue from here. Ice Caves is hard to solo if I remember correctly and the run from Deldrimor Warcamp is harder than I imagined it to be especially since I have no access to any useful elite, but I guess I'll just have to wait to be lucky.
I spent the rest of the time farming for the max armor (I still miss the helmet because I can't decide on the attribute bonus) and tackling the easier missions before I go for the hard ones. Ruins of Surmia, the Nolani Academy bonus and Borlis Pass were easy so far.

Gj, keep it up. The best part about soloing to me was occasionally you get an absolutely insane drop in low/mid level areas. With luck, you find something worth XXe or greater. Im sure Precipice will b pretty tough, but Ring of Fire may wear you out when you hit Coventina the Matron. You have to go a bit out of your way to defeat her.

Props to you for doing this... I tried duoing as Warrior with my Monk friend and that was pretty hard as it was... ended up giving up after a while. I look forward to keeping up with your progress!

No major update because I was on a journey. Made some easy missions and ran to all outposts outside the Southern Shiverpeaks and the Ring of Fire. I'll add more details when sth interesting happens.

So you mean you already soloed everything? In what fashion did you do this (like with/without consumables or with/without non-prophecies skills)?
Depending on how long ago you did this the difficulty may have changed completely.

I'm interested too now, how far did you get? And what was your general strategy?

Another miniupdate:
Because for whatever reason I didn't do the bonus of Elona Reach last time, I did it now. Gates of Kryta was also quite simple, but I forgot I had to get the pig so I went in again and the bonus quest was very easy because the phantoms have no snares. Divinity Coast was a mission that used to drive me insane back then because the henchmen didn't heal the villagers, but even despite the fact that as a true wammo I may not heal other persons it wasn't such a great deal. Only the ettins got close to killing one.

And in case anyone's interested here's my equipment:

A rune of vitae, a fiery sword hilt, which may become useful against other warriors and materials for the armor crafter

The Short Sword and the Scitimar dropped like that and the Scitimar is used for running. The Long Sword and the Shield are from collectors of the Crystal Desert.
The armor was purely a choice of which materials are the cheapest. The insignias are 1x Lietenant's and 4x Sentry's though I consider changing that. The runes are 2x vitae, strength, tactics and sup. absorption. The helmet is still 71 armor and has +1 strength. I consider buying minor vigor and two helmets (one for running, one for fighting).

I believe we got halfway through the Maguuma Jungle before it got too frustrating and slow. We never really tried to run the missions and instead fought our way through for fun, which is ill advised. =)

It was difficult for us to find a good mix of tanking, damage, and healing... the more defense I brought, it became increasingly difficult to kill things and my monk would just spam heal me all day - sometimes we'd try smiting but that was when Smiter's Boon was bugged, so that didn't work too well. I'm sure there is a way, and it is definitely easier to duo things especially in places like Aurora Glade where you actually do need to kill large groups at end of the mission in order to maintain control of the pedestals to open the Henge of Denravi.

Either way, these were our main characters and we didn't want to dillydally forever so we caved in and now use heroes so we can experience all the content to our heart's desire... but good luck in your endeavor!

@Califorun: Well I guess the problem with your duo was that the monk didn't really add much. A warrior can both tank and deal damage well. With a healing monk you don't need to focus on tanking as much and can kill enemies faster, but not much. At least in the low level areas. In the high level areas it may be very strong (relatively speaking). If anyone's interested in duo play I'm too.
But now that you mentioned Aurora Glade I just had to try it myself

The beginning is simple just run past everything (sort of 5 white mantles) and get to the interesting part where you have to attune the portals. For my first attempt my startegy was to use Bull's Strike, Hamstring and body blocks to take out the runner of the white mantle, but the problem with that was that some other white mantle takes the role and other mantles join the running group so after having killed the 3rd runner the group was too large and I got killed. Other attempts failed too, because of stupid mistakes. With my successful run I used Hamstring to slow down the runner and used the time to kill his followers, but it's not as easy as it sounds. When you attack the group mantles from the base come towards you and abbots try to heal the one being attacked and when you attack the abbot another abbot appears and so on. In the end it was a very tedious process of running, injuring the ones accidently lured, running some more, injuring them some more etc until a single mob finally falls. And to add to the tediousness GW suddenly stopped receiving input from my keyboard meaning I had to do everything with my mouse. But eventually the whole base got killed one by one and I could finally kill the runner and the demagogue. The primary goal boss was nothing special.
Bloodstone Fen was next and the bonus was easy. Running past opponents is nothing special solo. Due to stupid mistakes I died two times in the later part of the mission (luring two wind riders and necro boss at once), but then Hablion fell as well.

The only thing missing in the jungle is The Wilds. I absolutely hate this mission and soloing it didn't help. It's not hard but tedious and there's one spot where I got rubberbanded again and again. I then realized it's just bugged, because there are vines but the client doesn't know this. Working my way through the rest of the low-level areas I did D'Alessio Seaboard. My initial strategy was to go wammo-style and heal Dorian, but with 4 blinders appearing the damage just overwhelmed us. As offense is the best defense I became a smiter and it wasn't that hard. Also mysteriously missing is The Frost Gate the reason being that I failed to kill the groups of two dolyak riders and 3 melees, but that must have been bad equipment (Balthazar's Aura was mostly a wasted slot).
To prepare for the harder challenges I captured my first elite skill just outside Beacon's Perch.

Ascension
Elona's Reach: Already ran - nothing special.

Thirsty River: This mission was known as a noob barrier and I made good plantinum from running it Well my current situation is a bit more difficult as I lack Healing Hands and WoH got buffed since I last ran it. Back then it was enough to hit the priest a few times, but now he heals himself quite effectively. Three things are essential for soloing this mission: protection, enough damage to kill the priest in an acceptable time and healing. I doubt that I found the optimal solution but it got the job done.
The first group was relatively simple. Run to the priest and waste energy before Energy Burn (I didn't have Balathazar's up there) if possible. To prevent the bosses selfheal I put another Strength of Honor on the Ghostly Hero as soon as I could get him in range.
The two following groups are a bit harder. The ele group poses no real threat to me so I kill the priest and everyone else besides the boss but I can't kill the boss so I have to lure the other group to him to take care of him. I do this also to have a free path to the priest and try to kill it. The only problem being that these stupid cursebearers manage to get killed by the boss, rezz and then the rangers come too and blind me. In this case I can give up.
The final battle was somewhat difficult, because I had no plan what to do. I figured that the greatest threat is the monk boss because there's no way I can kill a priest through dual WoH and Throw Dirt. So what I did was lure the other two teams there and hope for enough distraction to be able to kill the priest. My first opportunity came after 19 minutes - so close. At 24 minutes the next opportunity - the monk boss itself is under attack. This time it works.
I already knew that I could take out the warrior team myself but the ranger team is annoying because of a group inside the priest chamber and a blinding boss. I lured them into fights with each other and tried to attack the priest before they rezz but the boss just never got involved and it was impossible to kill the priest with blindness. I then noticed that he would follow me great distanced when trying to use Throw Dirt on me. I used this to lure him just far enough away, killed him just after rezz time and fortunately took out the priest in less than 20 sec.
As I said I knew I could take out the warrior team because the patrols are outside the aggro range of the priest, but I got bodyblocked twice by the boss, rubberbanded and got almost killed..
As far as the bonus is concerned I just have to be about 8 times quicker.

Dunes of Despair: I used a dirty trick here. I killed everything besides the mesmer boss on the way to the temple, took the Ghostly Hero with me, slipped past it, lowered the bridge, cleared the temple, let the hero begin the ritual and then killed the boss triggering the cutscene and putting us outside the temple again.
Bonus shouldn't be too hard with Consume Corpse.

Augury Rock: Frenzy + 7 empty slots + auto-attack

Time to unlock the secondaries. I don't know if I will be able to solo another mission.

I intended to wait for the next post until Glint is slain, but it's been a long time, so here is another one anyway.

The secondaries were mostly easy stuff. It's easy to kill some melee monsters with ripostes etc. The only trouble was the Yxthoshth for the ranger quest. Getting to him is easy, but requires sprint, his minions can easily be pulled individually, but he just puts way more degen on me than I can heal. I also wanted to catch his elite - it's not very useful to me, but it'd be troublesome to get it elsewhere - so I had to be mesmer. In the end I fought fire with fire in a close match.

Then I caught some elites outside Beacon's Perch. I'm still undecided whether that was worth the time.

Unlocking the missing outposts I started from Deldrimor Warcamp and after many desperate attempts I was eventually lucky enough to rezz at the other portal. Not really knowing what to do now, I rezoned frequently hoping the big group of Ice Golems would go away. Then I ran into a spawn with two rangers and got owned, while I could have easily tanked 8 Golems. But the rezz helped me again.
The way to Copperhammer Mines was a lot of tanking and tanking. And the way to Iron Mines had just one difficult part, which I solved with hex breaking.
Before I went to Thunderhead Keep and Marhan's Grotto I infused my armor (actually I tried without and failed). Then the run was easy and a lot of tanking.

Catching the OP skill Grenth's Balance and obtaining the last 15 attribute points, I'm now ready for Glint (hopefully). Unless some balance update ruined it, I shall slay her eventually.

My first attempt ended on these damn Crystal Guardians. For the next round I bought a second set of armor and distributed my attributes in a way that allowed me to keep up Dolyak Signet with the +4 strength helmet. As a result I'm now broke.
However...

Glint is dead. This time with video too

Immediate goals:

1. Dunes of Despair Bonus
Besides Thirsty River Bonus the only thing missing besides the last 6 missions. While I have little hope for Thirsty River, this shouldn't be a possible. I tried teleporting outside but simply can't kill anything outside. Jade Scarabs flee immediately. The Necro Boss almost kills himself with Order of the Vampire but also flees when his health is getting low enough for me to kill him.
I'll try the glitch again and just hope that 10 min will be enough to kill the bosses.
2. Iron Mines of Moladune
Seems a very possible mission.
3. Cap all available Warrior elite skills
Ugh, again through Dragon's Lair to get Gladiator's Defense.
I wonder if it's possible to kill the boss without an interrupt. I know that everything else up to him is, but his Signet of Healing seems too strong to leave an interrupt out.

NO! You'll see what a horribly slow and inefficient player I am.
Here you have it:

I capped Cleave and Dwarven Battle Stance in Iron Mines of Moladune, Battle Rage in the troll cave just outside Droknar's Forge, VIM from a Grawl outside Port Sledge and Warrior's Endurance in Elona Reach.

Then I attempted the Iron Mines mission. At first I tried to go the alternative path to avoid the azure shadows before the cutscene, but soon realized it's much harder, but I triggered the bonus just to see what happens, and managed to lure the Inquisitor away from his group, but eventually he stopped the fight and followed his path again. On the next try I bodyblocked him. When he normally would run away he just stands there and does nothing (expect Spectral Agony).

I entered again this time taking the normal path and realized Balanced Stance is really all you need. Then I ignored the Eidolon (although I should have infused my second armor set...) and headed towards Markis. The groups there are easy to pull and besides Mursaat Elementalists no big problem. Markis himself is weak too.

Then I entered Ice Caves of Sorrow. The Heretics at the beginning are a pain in the ass, but manageable. Well the bonus is just a lot of barrel running, so I did this.

Of course I use the trick letting the Mursaat go ahead, but it must have glitched, because most groups were still there and the Mursaat still alive. I failed because I couldn't kill a Dolyak Master in the path. But that was because I entered primarily for the bonus. Witte Was's thread says this mission cannot be soloed, because of a Monk boss in the way, but someone claims to have killed it using Disrupting Chop. Does this boss (Darda Goldenchief) have halved casting time? If yes I see no way to interrupt him. Can't think of many other ways to counter it either.

EDIT:
- Capped Devastating Hammer in Iron Mines of Moladune and Earth Shaker in Snake Dance.
- Tried unsuccesfully to cap Skull Crack or Melandru's Resilience.
Regarding Skull Crack I have to kill Hail Blackice in Spearhead Peak. He is accompanied by 3 Rock Ice (warriors who also have Skull Crack) and a mesmer boss. I don't know if the mesmer is a problem or not, because what I do is I lure them from below and let him wand me out of casting range, but sometimes he simply runs up and annoys me for no particular reason. I can tank the warriors, but it seems Ripostes are simply not enough to kill them, seems they regenerate health like bosses do and the damage spreads out too much. I'll test some direct damage.
Regarding Melandru's Resilience I cannot get the Facet of Light down without Grenth's Balance. This makes no sense, because all Grenth's does is lower the hp and I still have to finish, but I'll try more.
Missing warrior elites:
- Eviscerate and Bull's Charge, which can only be obtained in Sorrow's Furnace or the Ring of Fire islands.
- Backbreaker, "Charge!" and Hundred Blades, which can only be obtained in the Ring of Fire islands.
- Skull Crack
- Flourish, which I'll try to cap soon.
- Gladiator's Defense, which forces me to go through Dragon's Lair again with 1 skill less.

Today I got my first Birthday present and am now in the company of a Fungal Wallow.
First I went into Dragon's Lair again to cap Gladiator's Defense. I failed two runs at the Crystal Guardians trying to sprint past them. In the end I did fight all of them, but I put in Sprint instead of Shield Stance anyway to save time in the previous levels - however I noticed the Guardians being harder that way. To cap the skill I replaced Distracting Blow. I was concerned I may not be able to kill the boss due to the Signet of Healing, but I was lucky. The super intelligent AI doesn't use it at low health.

Next was Flourish in Mineral Springs. This was a pain because the boss always spawns with Wises who spam Ineptitude so I had to tank a lot and wait for opportunities to get a Sever Artery through to slowly bleed them to death. Actually I was losing health slowly but I killed them fast enough. After ~20min I grinded all the minions to death and only the boss remained. I was stupid not to bring D-Shot and couldn't kill him. So I had to do it again.

As I said I was going to try direct damage against Hail Blackice and it worked fine. The thing with him however is that it's a real pain to get to him. You don't need a single skill for it, but a good spawn. I begin with zoning in and out until the Dwarves near the portal spawn. Then I wait for the Captain to rush in and run through and hope not to get targeted. Then I check whether there are any foes between me and the boss and if yes I use the nearby portal to rezone. Sometimes however I get caught by patrols or get a spawn directly outside the portal and die. It's a very tedious process. However may new strategy worked perfectly.

Now I try to finally get Dunes of Despair bonus and then it's time to go into Sorrow's Furnace. If someone thinks Thirsty River bonus or Thunderhead Keep is possible, please tell me.

I failed as hard as you possibly can, but now I know I'll make it and not only with a 1 in 100 spawn or something.

I'll leave you in the dark for a while how I did it. I wonder if someone else can figure it out. The screenshot of success will be edited into this post in a few days.

Of course, but how do you kill anything in range as a W/N? All opponents run away when they can't reach you or are on low health. The necro boss almost kills himself already using his Order of the Vampire, so my idea was to spike him down, but that requires a lot of skills and more importantly attribute points.
The other bosses are absoultely hopless due to their self healing or lack of corpse.
So I realized my only chance was to hope for a spawn with the necro boss in the front position and reachable with a longbow and the other two bosses being the Warrior and Mesmer with weak self-selfhealing.
I can hardly imagine sth more tedious than try for that less than 1:40 chance, but that was my plan. Purely by accident I found a very elegant method to kill a Scarab. Look at the Scarab's skills and try to figure out what kind my 6th skill is.

I don't think Elona Reach bonus or Thunderhead Keep are possible with these rules, but I'd gladly be proven wrong.
So now I'll try to cap the missing elites in Sorrow's Furnace and maybe do some of the quests there, if that's possible.

This is some truly epic stuff. Im fully inclined to get my warrior and go Grenth's and solo SF, if not more. Maybe run Droks a few times or something. Just makes me want to revisit my nostalgic memories. But aside from that, this is seriously amazing, and i wish you all the luck in the world. Im sure Hells Precipice will pose a challenge, but i think you could pull it off
